Have you checked out SUPACELL on Netflix? It’s a British sci-fi superhero series created by Rapman. With just six episodes in the first season, I was hooked from the very first episode. Can’t wait to see what season 2 has in store!
In this series, you’ll meet Black superheroes based in South London, and each one of them is quite lovable in their own right. In fact, the majority of them are exceptionally likable. Moreover, the rationale behind their superpowers (and why only Black individuals possess them) is absolutely brilliant.

Get to know these superheroes
Supacell follows the story of five regular individuals who suddenly discover they have superpowers. One moment they’re living their normal lives, and the next moment their eyes glow amber as their powers are unleashed.
he power they each have is distinct and requires them to grasp it and (most importantly!) regulate it.
The five individuals, strangers to one another, share only one commonality: they are all Black residents of South London.
Michael Lasaki is one of them. When his powers suddenly awaken, his initial encounter leads him to the realization that he must locate the other four in order to rescue the woman he loves.
You have to love this cast
I anticipated that a few of the main characters would be bothersome or unsympathetic. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In a narrative centered around characters, it’s not essential to adore every character, but it is crucial to empathize with them. Appreciate their significance.
Being in a gang means he’s made some questionable choices, but we see different sides of him early on that help us understand him.
Definitely, the selection of these lead roles has been crucial for the success of the project. Playing the five superheroes are Tosin Cole (61st Street) as Michael, Nadine Mills (The Strangers) as Sabrina, Eric Kofi Abrefa (The One, Blue Story) as Andre, Calvin Demba (The Rig) as Rodney, and Josh Tedeku (Moonhaven) as Tazer.
In the frequently equally significant supporting characters, we have Adelayo Adedayo (Origin) playing Dionne, Rayxia Ojo (Call The Midwife) portraying Sharleen, and Giacomo Mancini (Top Boy) as Spud.
It’s great to see Eddie Marsan playing Ray, one of the masterminds behind the scenes, while Sian Brooke takes on the role of hospital manager Victoria in the series.
Don’t miss Supacell on Netflix – it’s a must-watch!
Rapman is the mastermind behind the show, taking on the roles of Creator, Showrunner, and Lead Director. You might remember Rapman from his work on Blue Story (2019), and if you do, you might spot a familiar face among the cast. You’ll also notice some similarities in the setting and the obstacles the characters face.
In season 1, Sebastian Thiel (Dreaming Whilst Black) is also taking the reins for some episodes.
Binge-watching the entire season is a piece of cake with only six episodes. The characters are wonderfully developed and portrayed, enhancing the awesomeness of the core plot.
Additionally, each episode leaves us hanging with cliffhangers, whether they are minor or major. It definitely kept me hooked and eager to continue watching. I was so curious to see how this season would conclude. And once it did, I was already looking forward to season 2 right away.
Supacell Season 1 will be available on Netflix starting June 27, 2024.
